Kitty Gogins has released, My Flag Grew Stars: World War II Refugees’ Journey to America.

Her book brings to life the fascinating story of Olga and Tibor Zoltai. Their world destroyed in World War II, teenagers Olga and Tibor flee Hungary. Olga minutes ahead of advancing Russian troops and Tibor conscripted by the Germans almost dies as an American POW. Their experiences on the losing side provide a unique perspective of war, the actions of Americans, and the daily fight of refugees to survive.

Immigrating as indentured agricultural servants, they unite, embarking on a cultural journey to become Americans. Through perseverance and creativity, they learn how to thrive, Tibor as a world-renowned professor at the U of M and Olga counseling refugees, earning the title “area immigrants’ patron saint.”

My Flag Grew Stars provides an inspiring story on adapting to major upheaval, something many face in these challenging economic times.

"My Flag Grew Stars is Olga and Tibor’s journey of loss and fulfillment, of a passion for justice, knowledge and welcoming love. A powerful read."   ―DeCramer, Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs

“We in the book business are brought so many independently published memoirs, but I believe My Flag Grew Stars is my favorite. The author involves us directly in Olga and Tibor, and their struggle to stay alive and finally immigrate to the United States.  Her beautiful telling and numerous pictures bring the history to life.”  ―Sue Zumberge, Common Good Books (Garrison Keillor's store)

"...an enlightening look at history on the personal level, highly recommended."

                                              ―The Midwest Book Review

Individual faces often disappear when we speak of the years between 1900 and 2000 as the ‘century of the refugee.’ Here, in a single Hungarian family’s story, the emblematic refugee comes alive. A compelling read: Highly recommended.”

―Gabaccia, Immigration History Research Center, U of M
